Why

What CES is

The computer-based knowledge test a crewing agency asks you to sit before a contract.

CES (Crew Evaluation System) assesses a seafarer's professional knowledge. Questions follow rank and level of responsibility: an AB, a watchkeeping officer, an engineer and a cook get different sets and different pass marks. The test is in English, and one weak functional area drags the whole score down.

Pass on the first sitting

The exam is assembled for your rank and level, so you practise on your own material instead of a general list found online.

See the weak area

Results break down by area: navigation, cargo, safety, machinery, GMDSS and the rest. You know exactly what to work on.

No single paper to memorise

Every attempt rebuilds the set from the bank. A retake is a new paper, not the one you have already learned by heart.

Understand, do not guess

Explanations are written in English and Russian: they say why the answer is right instead of just marking the correct option.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

About the test, the trainer and access.

What is the CES test?
CES (Crew Evaluation System) is a computer-based test of a seafarer's professional knowledge, used by crewing companies when hiring and before a contract. It is taken by rank: an AB, a watchkeeping officer, an engineer and a cook get different question sets and different pass marks.
How many questions does the trainer have?
The bank holds 15,275 questions in English. It feeds 38 tests: 14 exams by rank, 9 drills by vessel type and 15 drills by topic. Every attempt rebuilds its question set, so a retake is a new paper rather than the one you already memorised.
Can I try it for free?
Yes. Free entry opens two diagnostics of 24 questions each (deck and engine) and a sample drill of 12 questions on safety and LSA. The diagnostic shows your score and your weak areas; correct answers and explanations open with full access.
What is the pass mark?
In the trainer the threshold follows rank and level: from 45 percent for an AB or a cook to 80 percent for a master, chief officer or chief engineer. An exam runs 40 to 72 questions. Check the exact requirement with your employer.
What language are the questions in?
Questions and options are in English, exactly as the real test presents them. Explanations are written in both English and Russian.
Is this the official CES?
No. Seatrainer is an independent trainer for self-paced preparation. It is not affiliated with, licensed by, or certified by the CES rights holders and does not issue any certificates.
Is there a timer?
No. You check each answer when you want to and read the explanation to the end. The trainer deliberately runs without a clock: the point is to understand the material, not to beat it.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The SeaTrainer Android app downloads the course to your device, and search across all 15,275 questions works offline. Web and app share one progress record on the same account.
