Seatrainer
Seatrainer is an independent online service that gives access to trainers and study materials for self-paced preparation for CES (Crew Evaluation System), the Marlins Test for Seafarers and the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP).
The trainers are designed for seafarers and cadets who need to prepare for a specific task: passing the Marlins Test at a crewing agency or working confidently with IMO standard phrases on the radio. This is not a general English course: here you get 478 tasks in the exact Marlins format and 2231 standard phrases with real audio.
The question bank is structured by the sections of the official Marlins Test format (Listening, Grammar & Vocabulary, Reading, Time & Number); the SMCP audio course covers PART A and B (IMO Resolution A.918(22)). The service has been running since 2021 on the Moodle platform and is not affiliated with the rights holders of Marlins or the IMO.

About the exam, the trainers and the price.
How much does Seatrainer cost?
The free Marlins Test trial course is open with no payment and no time limit. Full access to the Marlins trainer costs 1499 RUB for one month or 2999 RUB for three months. The SMCP audio course costs 490 RUB for one month, 890 RUB for three months or 1490 RUB for a year. Payment is one-off, for the access period you choose.
What sections does the Marlins Test have?
The online Marlins Test for Seafarers has four sections: Listening, Grammar & Vocabulary, Reading, and Time & Number. Writing and Speaking are normally not part of the online version.
What is the passing score for the Marlins Test?
The test itself has no single official pass mark: the requirement is set by the crewing company or the shipowner. In practice 60% and above is the most common requirement, and officers are usually held to a higher bar than ratings. Check the exact figure with your employer.
How many questions and mock tests does the trainer have?
478 questions in Marlins Test format and 6 mock tests of 60 questions each. Attempts are unlimited: after every attempt you see the answer review and which sections cost you points.
What is SMCP?
SMCP (Standard Marine Communication Phrases) are the standardised phrases for maritime communication adopted by the IMO in Resolution A.918(22). The Seatrainer course covers PART A and PART B: 2231 phrases and 5218 audio examples recorded by live speakers.
Do I need to install anything?
No, the trainers run in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There is also a SeaTrainer app for Android in RuStore: it downloads the course onto the device, so questions and audio keep working without internet, at sea for example.

What is the CES test?
CES (Crew Evaluation System) is a computer-based test of a seafarer's professional knowledge that crewing companies ask you to sit when hiring. Questions follow rank: an AB, a watchkeeping officer, an engineer and a cook get different sets and different pass marks. See the CES course page.
How is the CES trainer different from a list of answers?
A fixed list with the correct option marked trains one paper. Here the set is rebuilt from a bank of 15,275 questions on every attempt, and the result is broken down by functional area, so you can see which subject needs work.
Is Seatrainer the official Marlins?
No. Seatrainer is an independent self-study service. It is not affiliated with, licensed by or certified by the Marlins rights holders (Ocean Technologies Group Ltd), it is not an educational institution and it issues no diplomas or certificates.
